Sporting Activities.

St. Oliver Plunkett N.S. has a long and proud sporting tradition where we offer a wide range of sporting activities for all our pupils to participate in. Our emphasis is on pupil enjoyment, participation and being active with our peers. Sport is a wonderful median to inspire confidence, improving social interaction and to aid the healthy physical development of our children. Our staff here are involved in training and coaching classes in many different disciplines. Gaelic games, (Hurling,Football, Camogie), Soccer, Athletics and Rugby are among the main disciplines we participate in.

We are very fortunate to have very modern and suitable sporting facilities here in our school including an Astro Turf pitch, a basketball court. We also have access to the community hall and pitch situated right beside our school.

Cross Country

Every year we take part in Cross Country competition. We have experienced great success in this competition in recent years. This year we had 7 pupils qualifying for the county final.

GAA. Hurling. Football. Camogie

Gaelic Games are very much part of school life here in Our children are introduced to Gaelic Games from Senior infants. We are very fortunate that several staff members are keen GAA enthusiasts and weekly coaching is provided as part of our PE curriculum and after school. In addition Galway GAA send both Gaelic Football and Hurling coaches to our school for a few hours each week. We also work closely with our local GAA Club, Athenry GAA Club. We compete in different competitions in hurling, camogie and football every year.


Swimming.

Our classes go to Raheen Woods, Athenry for a block of swimming lessons.


Soccer

Every year we take part in the FAI 5 aside competition.


Futsal

Our 3rd class take part in the Futsal in the Yard programme every year. Futsal in the yard is a programmme introduced to improve agility, balance and coordination for primary school pupils using fun games and activities. Over the course of the five week programme, 3rd class practice and improve on the skills of dribbling, passing, shooting, tackling and most importantly teamwork! The adapted lessons have allowed all children in the class to participate in a safe and enjoyable manner. The lessons involve smaller sized 1 v1 player games that are gradually developed each week to make 5 v 5 team games of Futsal.


Active Schools Week

We have been awarded Active Schools Status and every year we hold an Active Schools Week. It is always a much anticipated and exciting week where all pupils take part in numerous activities throughout the week.
