First Class

Let's Go School Tour

For our end of year school tour we headed off to Let's Go in the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence in Bekan, Co. Mayo.

It was a jam-packed, fun-filled day of activities from start to finish. We did Zorbing, Tug-of-War, Air Mountain, Wobbly Ladder and rode on KMX bikes. It was pure joy.

Minibeast Hunt

We went exploring in the garden one fine day recently to see what minibeasts we could find lurking there.

We used magnifying glasses and pooters to help us and checked under logs and stones. You wouldn't believe what we found hiding there. We found centipedes, millipedes, slugs and woodlice to name but a few.

Drumadore Workshop

We were very lucky to have the opportunity to take part in a Drumadore Workshop recently.

We found the workshop so enjoyable and thought it was one of the best workshops we ever took part in. A big thanks you to the guys from Drumadore for coming in to entertain us and show us how to drum.

Camogie Blitz

The girls had a great time at the Parish Blitz in Carnaun on Friday. They showed their skills in matches against Coldwood N.S., Carnaun N.S., Lisheenkyle N.S. and against their own friends in Newcastle.

Everyone really enjoyed the day and was delighted with their medal and treats. They ended the day watching the 5th/6th class girls win the tournament and celebrated with a singsong on the bus and of course, with the highly anticipated celebratory arch back at school.

Huge thank you to Dermot, Elaine and all at Athenry Camogie Club for a super day. Everyone is already looking forward to next year. Thanks also to all the parents and grandparents who came to support the girls.

Well done to all the girls- the future of camogie in Newcastle looks bright!

Fairy Doors

We worked with a partner to paint and decorate fairy doors. When they were dry we chose a fine day to place them in the fairy garden for all of the fairies .

Friendship Week

Friendship Week was a great success. We discussed how to be a good friend, listened to songs and made friendship bracelets. We truly are a wonderful group of friends.

The School Garden

The school garden is looking very fruitful after the summer months. We enjoyed exploring the garden and seeing all of the new growth. We even got to taste some raspberries! The runner beans and corn on the cob are looking very impressive too.

Self-Portraits

We have been learning All About Me and thought it was a great opportunity to make some self-portraits. We used different materials and fabric and fibre to create our portraits. We are very happy how we worked and are proud of our creations.

Our First Day

We are delighted to be back at school after a lovely summer break and looking forward to the new school year with all of our friends and teacher.

Mask Making

As part of procedural writing we learned how to make animal masks from paper plates.

Here we are painting our masks. We enjoyed making the masks and needed a little help with cutting out the eyes and attaching the string.

Teddy Bear's Hospital

On the 26th January we brought all of our sick teddies along to the Teddy Bear Hospital in NUIG. They were seen and looked after by all the doctors working there.

We visited the X-Ray Department, Operating Theatre, Maternity and Pharmacy.

Some of our teddies needed stitches, plasters or bandages. Others needed x-rays, medicine or vaccinations.

We had a fantastic day at the Teddy Bear Hospital and a trip to remember. We loved meeting the doctors who were so helpful and learning all about work at the hospital.

Pointillism and Printing Techniques

Autumn is well and truly here. We used autumnal colours and a cotton bud to recreate the pointillism technique. We gathered leaves from around and used them to make leaf prints using the same colours of red, orange, yellow and brown. We know these colours in Irish too dearg, oráiste, buí agus donn.

Halloween Treats

We have been learning all about Procedural Writing and followed a number of steps to make some Crispy Pumpkins.

The ingredients we used were Rice Krispies, marshmallows, butter and jellies and chocolate to decorate.

Halloween Fun Day

Great fun was had dressing up in spooky costumes and playing Halloween games for our Halloween Fun Day.

We played The Flour Game and Pin the Smile on the skeleton. We Bobbed for Treats and used marshmallows to play Snap Apple. We really enjoyed the Halloween Parade too.

Floating and Sinking

We experimented with different materials to see if they would float or sink and made predictions about what might happen.

Next we designed and built rafts using lollipop sticks, corks, sponges and masking tape. Then we investigated to see whether our rafts would bare weight and carry toy figures in water.

Science Week

During Science Week we had a Zoom call with Mark the Science Guy. He showed us lots of fun and interesting experiments. We also had a visit from the Exploration Dome.

Maths Week

For Maths Week we learnt all about 2-D shapes. We made lots of shape pictures and looked for examples of 2-D shapes in the classroom. We also did a fun activity called All About Me in Number.

Yoga

We enjoy taking some time out of our day to do some yoga. We enjoy doing yoga as part of a movement break and for wellbeing and mindfulness.

Clay Animals

We used clay to make clay hedgehogs and owls. We pinched and molded the animals into shape and used matchsticks for spines and beads for eyes.

Bird Watch Ireland

We had a visit from Bird Watch Ireland and got to pet and examine some stuffed or taxidermy birds at the end of the presentation.

We found the powerpoint we were shown very interesting and really enjoyed trying to identify birds that are native to Ireland.

World Book Day

On World Book Day 3rd Class came to do some shared reading with us. We really enjoyed this experience and reading with our reading buddies. It was fun to dress up as our favourite book characters too.

Fractions

We have starting learning all about fractions and halves. We made some fruit salad by cutting oranges and grapes into halves as well as some peppers and carrots. One of the best parts was when we got to eat the tasty salad after all of our hard work.
