Third Class
We have been learning all about Forces in Science and STEM. We made a boomerang like object called a whirligig. We tested out our whirligigs and flew them vertically and horizontally. We also designed a vehicle in groups and explored how they could be moved. We used Lego and maths equipment to build our vehicles and tested them out on land and water. We described our vehicles and how they travelled and spoke out how we could improve our designs. We reflected on our projects.
We recently took part in a Coding Workshop using the code of Scratch. We learned how to create projects on the iPads using sprites, motion, sound, looks and controls. We enjoyed making a code for our sprites and creating imaginative projects. We now have our very our Scratch accounts and will build on the knowledge we took away from the workshop and continue our work in class.
We celebrated World Book Day on 5th March. We dressed up as our favourite book characters, had some DEAR time and did shared reading with our buddies from 1st Class. It was a really enjoyable day and one we look forward to every year.
3rd Class took part in a series of history workshops with historian Martin Curley as part of the Heritage in Schools project in January. 3rd class learnt all about bogs and went on a field trip to a local bog. During the first workshop, 3rd class used the Galway Library website to investigate maps and townland names in the Newcastle area. Using this information, they were then able to identify areas where there may be a bog. They prepared for the field trip by learning about the flora and fauna they may see, including a variety of plants and mosses.
During the field trip they listened for any wildlife and looked out for any of the flora they had learned about including Long Leaved Sundrew and Red Bog Moss as well as the Whitethorn Tree. They even spotted a fossil and large stone from the Ice Age along the way.
As part of Science Week we got to take part in a workshop called Bricks 4 Kids. Each kid in the class got their own set of Lego bricks and instructions to follow.
There were three aeroplanes to build, each with a greater level of difficulty and complexity. We got a motor each and were able to rotate the propellers. We have also been learning about Denmark in class, the home of Lego. This was a thoroughly enjoyable workshop to take part in.
For Science Week 3rd Class carried out some experiments called Floating Man, Dancing Raisins and Skittles.
In the Dancing Raisins experiment the aim was to make raisins dance and teach about baking soda and vinegar reaction (an acid reacting with a base).
In the Skittles experiments the aim was to learn about dissolving and absorption and to see how colours mix.
Finally, in the Floating Man experiment the aim was to learn about surface tension and to see ink float on water. We had great fun carrying out these experiements.
We had lots of fun playing Halloween party games. We played Snap Apple and went bobbing for fruit and sweets treats. For art we made a Pumpkin Collage using orange and black card. We cut out symmetrical shapes and added extra detail using white marker and crayon. Happy Halloween everyone!
We had the opportunity to participate in a fun basketball taster session on Friday 10th October. We were introduced to the game and practised a few skills. Thanks to Siobhán and Michelle from East Galway Celtics for facilitating the session and sharing their skills and knowledge with us.
As part of Maths Week we got to work with our buddies in 1st Class. It was also dress-up day so we worked together on some addition and subtraction Halloween mosaics. We absolutely love when our younger buddies come to visit and look forward to working with them again in the very near future.
For Maths Week we designed a Figure-Me-Out poster for our maths mates to solve. We used mathematical clues which our friends had to figure out. We also had fun measuring our friend's height using metre sticks and rulers.
We were delighted to have been chosen as one of only five schools in Ireland to take part in the Aviva Book Gifting Programme. As part of this wonderful initiative, our school received a Free to Be Me Little Library, containing 100 brand new library books for our pupils to enjoy.
As an extra bonus, we also won a visit from illustrator Úna Woods! Úna visited our school along with Aoife McDonnell from Children’s Books Ireland and some members of the Aviva staff to host an exciting Monster Doodle Workshop.
Pupils from 2nd and 3rd Class took part in the fun session. Úna showed everyone how to draw monsters, and then the children had the opportunity to design their own creative creatures on a huge poster rolled out across the floor. It was a fantastic, hands-on experience that everyone thoroughly enjoyed!
On Wednesday 10th September we were invited to Monivea Rugby Club to participate in a rugby blitz against other schools.
We lined out in teams and there was a great sense of comradery in the air. We had showers, sunshine and lots of success. It was a great day to be had and a good start to the year.
This year as part of the Explorers Education Programme we had a turtle talk on sea turtles. We learned about the five different sea turtle species recorded in Irish waters. We look forward to researching these species further for our group projects. We are already amazed by the interesting facts and information we heard about during the talk.
For Friendship Week we worked collaboratively to make some friendship art. We decided on what traits we want in friends and made friendship bracelets with our buddies in 1st Class. It was a lovely week at school.
