Maths Week 2024

We had a fantastic time during Maths Week in Senior Infants. We really enjoyed taking part in the guess how many sweets in the Jar challenge as well as completing our class question which was all about witches and ghosts. 

We really enjoyed using our data skills to record how many of each colour smarties was in our box. The best part we all agreed was definitly eating the smarties!

The highlight of the week was definitly our outdoor Maths trail with our buddies in 5th Class. We really enjoyed using our Maths eyes and learning from our friends. A huge thank you to 5th class and Ms Kearney for designing and organising the trail.


Friendship Week

We had lots of fun celebrating Friendship week.

We really enjoyed making friendship bracelets with our buddies in 5th class. Everyone worked with their buddy to design their own bracelet and spelled out their name using letters.


We also created a friendship recipe and made our own special friendship buns which included, kindness and having lots of fun.


Potatoes

We went out to the school garden this week and dug up the potatoes the children grew in Junior Infants. We then cleaned the potatoes and made them into chips. We all thought they were very tasty!

PE and History of Toys

We have been having great fun playing lots of games in PE in Senior Infants such as Gladiators and have really enjoyed using the parachute.

In History we discussed how toys have changed and enjoyed discussing and sorting toys into old and new toys.

RSA Streetscape

We were lucky to have a visit from the Road Safety Authority who helped us practice our road safety skills.

We learned how to stop, look and listen and because Senior Infants impressed so much they were all granted Safety Licences. Well done everyone!

Senior Infants 2024

We had a fantastic start back to school in Senior Infants this year. We had great fun constructing out of Lego, making jigsaws, developing our fine motor skills with threading and even worked together to build our own town.

School Tour

We had a fantastic day at Turoe Pet Farm! Everyone enjoyed interacting with a variety of friendly animals, bouncing on bouncy castles and in the playground. From feeding the animals to playing on the swings, the day was filled with excitement and laughter. The farm's staff were incredibly welcoming and provided us with valuable insights into farm life and animal care. It was a memorable experience for everyone, and we can't wait to visit again!

Sports Day

We had a fantastic Sports Day as part of our Active Schools week in Senior Infants. We participated in lots of fun activities like the three legged race, sack race, obstacle course etc. It was great to have some parents with us on the day to cheer everyone on.

Our Christmas Nativity

Senior Infants performed the show Hey Ewe this year. We thoroughly enjoyed dressing up as different people living in Bethlehem, as well as various people from the Christmas Nativity. Senior Infants really impressed with their acting skills, singing, dancing, actions and of course the amazing delivery of their lines. A huge thank you all the families for helping the children prepare for the big day. We are all very proud of the children's fantastic performance.

Santa

We had a very special visitor in Newcastle! Santa Claus came to wish all the boys and girls a very Merry Chrsitmas. He told them how proud he was of their kindness and really enjoyed listening to the children singing Christmas songs. Senior Infants really enjoyed the treats they were given by Santa!

Creating igloos

We learned about the polar regions this month. We decided to use our STEAM skills to create our very own igloos. It was quite tricky but we had lots of fun experimenting with different ways to build them. The materials we used were sugar cubes for the blocks and water icing for the cement!

Art with 5th Class

We really enjoyed working with our buddies in 5th class again. They helped us to create our very own Rudolph! Thanks to 5th class for all their help and support!

Chips

Senior Infants really enjoyed eating some tasty chips. We made them using the potatoes we harvested from the school garden. Thumbs up all around, they were really tasty!

Gardening

Senior Infants really enjoyed harvesting the potatoes they planted in Junior Infants. A huge thank you to Ms Magnier for encouraging the children to develop an awareness of where food comes from and ensuring the school garden continues to support the learning of all our students.

Hurling

Senior Infants were very lucky over the last few weeks to have a chance to develop their hurling skills with our brilliant coach Cian! A huge thanks to Athenry Gaa and Cian for all their hard work encouraging the next generation of hurlers.

Hot Chocolate 🍫

To finish off Science Week, we got to enjoy some lovely hot chocolate. We really enjoyed adding the marshmellows, cream and sprinkles. Newcastle Café has been a big hit in Senior infants. We really enjoy making different types of food and drinks!

Science Week

Senior Infants had great fun during Science week.

We investigaed what materials can sink and float in our water area. We also experimented with what materaisl was best to make a new coat for Owly our class puppet. We agreed that tinfoil was the best material we tested because  it didn't let the water true. Tissue paper was by far the worst material.

We were so luck to be invited to visit 6th class who had prepared diffferent Science experiments to show us in small groups. It was very exciting and lots of fun. A huge thank you to 6th class, Ms Colleran and Ms Carty for organising everything.

Funny Face Biscuits

We have been learning all about Café's and been enjoying roleplaying as customers, chefs, waiters etc. We also read a lovely story called Friday's at the Café which inspired us to make our own funny faced biscuits. Senior Infants all agreed that the best part was tasting them 👍.

Halloween 🎃🎃🎃🎃

We had a very fun spooky time in Senior Infants celebrating all things Halloween. We really ebjoyed the Halloween parade, all the games and our Halloween party. Everyone looked brilliant in their costumes. Well done for making such a huge effort!

Halloween Art with 5th Class

We had great fun creating Halloween Art with 5th class. We made some scary witches out of card. We loved using the different colours and putting gems on the witches hats. Thanks to 5th class and Mr O Looney for all their help.

Autumn Nature Walk

We have been learning about all about the Season of Autumn. We went on a walk around the school and church to see if we could find any signs of Autumn. Everyone enjoyed getting out in the fresh air. We saw lots of berries, leaves and mushrooms. We even began to learn about deciduous and evergreen trees and why some trees never lose their leaves.

Maths Week 2023

We had so much fun during Maths Week 2023. A special congratulations to the winner of the Senior Infants Maths problem Shauna. We really enjoyed creating a pictogram based on a pack of smarties, making shape monsters and building a numicon city. We also enjoyed playing Maths games on the Ipads and Interactive Board. We are already looking forward to Maths week next year!

Bake Sale 2023

We had our annual bake sale this week. Senior Infants thoroughly enjoyed going down to the 6th class room and trying out al the yummy treats which had been kindly donated to the school. A big thank you to all the parents and school community for supporting this event. Senior Infants are already looking forward to the next bake sale!

Rainbow Fish

As part of friendship week Senior Infants listened to and discussed the story of The Rainbow Fish. We all really enjoyed the story and understood the importance of sharing with our friends and being kind to others. We completed some artwork based on the story.

Friendship Buns

Senior Infants worked together to create a friendship recipe which we used when making our friendship buns this week. We included ingredients such as sharing, being kind and having fun! The best part was decorating the buns and of course eating them!

Buddies :)

As part of Friendship week Senior Infants met their 5th class buddy for the first time. They had great fun gettting to know each other and making friendship bracelets.

Senior Infants also got to read their new PM books for their buddies, showcasing their skills as developing readers. We hope to read for our buddies again soon and complete lots of other fun activities!

The 5 Senses

As part of our theme Myself we learned about the five senses. Sight, heading, touch, taste and smell. We explored each sense at a different station which included tasting different flavours, smelling different fragrances and experimenting with the sounds of different instruments. 


We have also learned the 5 senses poem and are experts at reciting it!

Art

In Senior Infants we have been completing lots of Art based on ourselves and the theme of Autumn. We love working with paint and pastels in Senior Infants!

Playdough

In senior infants we love using playdough in lots of creative ways. We also enjoy playdough disco, a fun way to warm up our fingers before we start writing.

Parachute

In PE we have been playing lots of games which involve working as a team and cooperation. We really enjoyed playing with the parachute.

All about Me

In senior infants we have been completing activities about ourselves. We all created self portraits and drew pictures of our families and favourite things.

Literacy Lift Off

Senior Infants began engaging in Literacy Lift off this week. We were lucky to have so many adults helping us as we read new books, re read familiar stories, created words with magnetic letters, engaged in Literacy activities on the Ipads and practiced our letter formation and sentence writing. Senior infants have really impressed with how well they have been engaging in these activities!

Back to school 2023

We have been having lots of fun in Senior Infants this week and were lucky enough to welcome some new friends to our class this year! We have been doing lots of play and the children really enjoyed developing their fine motor skills in the morning and exploring the role play area, making constructions, working with playdough, colouring, playing with the doll house and lots more. Well done for a fantastic start everyone. 😀🥳
