Book Fair
We enjoyed a visit to the Tara Book Fair this week. It was nice to get the opportunity to read different books and share the books that we purchased with out classmates. We also had an enjoyed visit from author, Natasha Mac a 'Bháird.
Italy Projects
We had a fun-filled few weeks working in groups to produce a project on Italy. Each group made a poster and Google slides for their topic. They presented this work to the class and to the whole school during assembly. The areas researched included, Fashion, Italian Food, Art and Culture, Sport, Architecture, Italian Geography, Tourism and Volcanoes and Italian Cars.
Spring Art
5th Class produced some beautiful artwork based on spring flowers. We observed a range of wildflower art by different artists and used them as inspiration to produce of own paintings. We used a selection of colours and materials including different sized brushes, sponges and mixing palettes.
Well done Girls!
Well done to five of our 5th Class students who won gold recently with their basketball club, East Galway Celtics.
Seactain na Gaeilge
We had two brirlliant weeks at school celebrating our beautiful language and our culture. We enjoyed a Tráth na gCeist and a seanfhocail drawing competition with 6th Class, made an extra effort to speak more Irish throughout the day, played lots of games, had a céilí and performed 'Beidh Aonach Amárach' on Lá Glas.

Sock Puppets with our Buddies
We love working with our Senior Infant Buddies! We had great fun making sock puppets using a section of arts and crafts materials. Have a look at the brilliant creations.
World Book Day
World Book Day 2025 was a fun-filled day in Newcastle! We enjoyed the Book Character Parade and Buddy reading with our wonderful Senior Infant buddies!
Lego League
5th Class have started our Lego League projects based on the theme, 'Submerged'. We have already learned so much about oceans, marine biologists and sea creatures. We are so thrilled to be participating in this programme and are looking forward to the next few weeks of team work and creativity.
Well-Being Week
We had a wonderful Well-Being Week again this year. We listened to relaxing music, made gratitude cards and did some yoga.
Valentine's Art
5th class created lovely artwork with the pointillism technique. All of our pieces of artwork were different and beautiful.
Maths
We enjoyed exploring the topic of 'length' in our environment. We worked in groups to estimate and measure various distances and objects in our school yard. We used a trundle wheel, metre sticks and tapes and rulers.
St. Brigid's Crosses
5th Class collected some rushes and made beautiful crosses for their families.
Local History with Martin Curley
5th Class were fortunate to participate in very interesting and engaging history sessions with Martin during the month of January. We explored our townlands and family names to gain a better understanding of our heritage. This incorporated some mapwork skills which highlighted how our townlands have evolved over the centuries. We also examined census documents which deepened our understanding of the past. A highlight of the sessions was sharing our interview answers which we conducted with our grnadparents and relations. It was brilliant to share some of their experiences of growing up in the local area with our friends.
We concluded our sessions with a nature walk where we had the opportunity to examine rock formations and searched for fossils.
Moana
We had a wonderful time at Clarin College's production of Moana. It was so nice to see our friends and past-pupil's performing so well on stage.
Marine Institute Explorers Programme
5th Class enjoyed a brilliant trip to Gratton Beach in Salthill as part of the Explorer's Programme. The theme of our project this year is Seashore Safari. Prior to our trip to the beach, we researched ocean fish, mammals and plants and worked in groups to create and present slideshows.
We really enjoyed our excursion which involed rock-pooling. We found many crabs, fish, barnacles and many other interesting creatures. We worked together and presented our findings to our classmates. We also searched for 'Mermaid's Purses' (Shark and Ray eggs). We even found one with a live baby shark inside! It was an incredible experience!
Science Week
We had a fun-filled exciting week this year to celebrate Science Week 2024! The class enjoyed the Science Foundation of Ireland (SFI) Science show. We observed many exciting experiments. We also joined 6th Class for a Science Quiz where our scientific knowledge was tested.
Later in the week, we hosted an experiment exhibition for our Senior Infant buddies. We worked in groups to organise and conduct our experiments. It was great to showcase these for our buddies. Our experiments included, slime and magnetic slime, exploding volcano, oobleck, coke and Mentos and a floating and sinking experiment. We concluded the week by researching and presenting on a famous scientist.

Maths Week
We loved Maths Week in 5th Class! We participated in a Maths TV Zoom with Ben Sparks where we we introduced to some cool maths tricks. We enjoyed other activities such as 'Guess the number of sweets in the jar' and the maths week maths problems. We also had great fun doing a maths trail with our Senior Infant buddies. Using our maths eyes to think of suitable questions was very enjoyable.
Friendship Week
5th Class participated in some lovely activities for Friendship Week including circle time activities and games which involved sharing the qualities that we look for in a friend, The highlight of the week was making friendship bracelets with our Senior Infant buddies!
RSA visit
5th Class enjoyed a visit from the RSA which involved participating in the streetscape activity. We discussed the imporatance of stopping, looking and listening when travelling on the road. We were also reminded of the importance of wearing our high-vis on when walking or cycling.
Tag Rugby Blitz
We were lucky to participate in the Connacht Rugby National Tag Blitz in Monivea on Wednesday. There were 7-a-side girl's and boy's teams on the day. We played Athenry P.S, Garbally, Newtown and Monivea. A great day out was had by all.
Welcome Back!
We did some beautiful art describing ourselves, our interests and our personalities. We are looking forward to a great year where we can develop our skills, talents and interests.
On Tuesday June 18th 5th and 6th class had an early start as they departed for Emerald Park in Co Meath. Upon arrival we began our tour with a walk through the zoo with our fantastic guide Darragh before letting our adventurous sides out exploring the rollercoasters and other rides in theme park. We arrived back shortly after 7 o clock after a fantastic day!
We celebrated Active Schools Week from June 10th-14th. Over the course of the week our class participated in basketball, soccer, rugby, athletics as well as our School Sports Day. We had a fantastic week of activities. We would like to say a big thank you to all of the coaches who gave up their time to help out throughout the week.
As part of the upcoming local and European elections 5th class learned about the voting process and how the election is actually organised. They created their own mock election which turned out to be an extremely exciting and closely fought campaign. It finished on the 9th count with only 1vote separating the 2final remaining candidates!
Lego League
Pupils in 5th class took part in the Lego League Showcase again this year as organised by Galway Education Centre. The theme for this year was Masterpiece. Students were encouraged to think about their own interests and hobbies and to incorporate them into their projects.
Through utilising the elements of STEAM (Science, Teachnology, Engineering, Art and Maths) the students created projects using their voices, coding and Lego.
Each child received a cert of participation, a medal and presented their projects to the rest of the school. Six students were chosen to then represent the school at a showcase in the Clayton Hotel in Galway.
On Thursday 21st March we celebrated World Down Syndrome Day in our school with our class performing a special song written for the day. Our class were delighted to perform it for the entire school during our assembly for the Parents Association Easter Raffle.
On Wednesday 20th March our class took part in an egg hunt with our Senior Infant buddies. Our little friends were so excited to get into the fairy garden to find the eggs we had hidden for them. Thanks to Mr Treacy for inviting us to set up and participitate in the egg hunt.
For Seachtain na Gaeilge we had fantastic fun over the past 2weeks. We completed a 'Tráth na gCeist' with 6th class. Well done to our winners and our runners up. On Thursday, we enjoyed a Céilí Mór as part of our Lá Glas in the hall and loved watching the classes perform different songs in Irish. We performed Despacito. Check out our performance. We also tried to use our cupla focail over the two weeks and learned some seanfhocail.
As part of our Music Generation programme 5th class have been learning Ukulele over the course of the year. On Friday March 15th they recorded one of their performances 'The Walk of Life'. You can click here to view the performance.
We celebrated World Book Day on Thursday March 7th. We had a great range of characters represented including fictional characters from books that our class wrote themselves. Well done to everyone who went to the trouble of dressing up for the day. We finished the day off with a parade of our costumes with all of the school watching. Reading is a valuable life skill and it was great to see so many boys and girls bringing in books with the characters they were dressed up as.
For the past 2months our class have been busy planning, writing and bringing their creative writing to life using the Book Creator app. Our class have entered the Write a Book competiiton and we had some amazing entries from members of our class. Well done to all the boys and girls who take part. It is a fantastic competition to participate in and they learned about the process that author's go through when writing novels and stories. Our 5th and 6th class were invited by Presentation College to their performance of 'Back to the 80s' in Kilcornan on 28th February. What a fantastic show it was. All of our boys and girls had a blast and really enjoyed the songs. It was great to see some past pupils from our school lighting up the stage also!
The week of 26th of March was our week to help ensure the yard and school grounds were free from litter. Well done to all the boys and girls who cleaned up the grounds. Thankfully we are very fortunate not to have much of a litter problem in our school. It was still a helpful reminder that if people decide to litter then somebody still has to pick that rubbish up.
Local History
For the month of January our class will be working with Martin Curley looking at local history. So far we have investigated old maps of our areas and have also looked at previous Census. A big thank you to everyone who kindly shared photos of rural life from the past also.
Hurling Coaching
Our class will be receiving hurling coaching every Tuesday over the next 4weeks. Please remember to bring your hurl and helmet on these days.
On Thursday 21st December our class performed their Christmas Play Straw and Order to a packed audience of parents and family. All of the boys and girls gave a fantastic performance on the day. As part of Science Week our class took part in a Coding workshop. Corrib Kids facilitated the workshop. We used Microsoft Make Code Arcade to create a simple computer game.
Last year before the summer holidays our class planted lettuces in the school garden. We harvested them recently and finally got to taste them. Nothing tastes as good as when you have had to put in some hard work to grow it yourself!
There was great excitement in our class with the news that Robin would be performing in The Late Late Toy Show. Everything was top secret in advance of the show but we were so proud of Robin when we saw her singing and playing the piano as she performed on the show. All of the class made posters wishing her good luck before she travelled to Dublin to take part in the biggest show of the year! Well done Robin!
On Monday 13th November we were very fortunate to have a Zoom call with Olympic medallist Aifric Keogh as part of the Dare to Believe programme. Aifric spoke to the children about her journey from taking up rowing as an 11year old all the way through to representing Ireland and competing at the Olympics. It was very interesting to learn that she has experienced plenty of ups and downs throughout her career due to injury etc. We would like to wish her well in her preparations for Paris next year. It was great to see her Olympic bronze medal too!
We had some fantastic spooky costumes for our Halloween Dress Up. Well done to all who went to the effort of dressing up for the day. We had some brilliant double acts too including Mario & Luigi, 2 Barbies and M&Ms. The whole school came together for our Halloween Parade which was a fantastic opportunity for everyone to view each other's costumes.
Tag Rugby Blitz
We had a fantastic time participating in a tag rugby blitz in Monivea Rugby Club organised by Connacht Rugby. On the day 5th and 6th class represented Japan in the tournament and played against lots of other schools. It was a fantastic way to practice our skills. We also researched a country that is participating in the World Cup as part of a class project.
Friendship Week
We celebrated Friendship Week in our school last week. We learned about the characteristics of our friends and what makes a good friend. We also worked with Senior Infants to help make friendship bracelets. It was a really enjoyable week for everyone.
5th class had great fun organising and running elections for our Student Council, Wellbeing Committee and Green School Committee this week for the rest of the classes in our school. They learned how to tally votes as well as what constitutes a spoiled vote. Well done to everyone who was elected for the various committees.
