4th Class
We had an amazing visit from Branar who brought the dramatic story of 'Ballad of a Bandit' to our 4th Class classroom. It was a big surprise and we loved hearing the tales and watching the stories of Captain McNamara unfold.

What a brilliant day we had celebrating World Book Day. Everyone dressed up as their favourite book characters. We had a parade and got to see everyone's costumes, before taking part in some Shared Reading with 2nd Class. We created great drawings of our favourite books with a small summary on the back.
4th Class were busy measuring on Thursday. We used measuring tapes, rulers, metre sticks and even trundle wheels to measure lengths and distances and they were busy adding up all these kilometres, metres and centimetres.
We were busy on Tuesday making pancakes with Ms Wall and eating them with all our favourite toppings.
This week we were learning all about 2D shapes in maths. We made our very own 2D shapes in many different ways and explained the properties of each shape. These included pentagons, octagons and equilateral, isosceles, scalene and right angle triangles.
Fourth Class sketched and painted some wonderful robins. We mixed colours and used water with our paints to get the correct colours and shades for our robins.
4th Class loved making St Brigid's Day crosses. They even got to walk to the bog and collect their own rushes to make each cross. It was difficult to get the hang of but we worked together and everyone made a cross to bring home.
Realtín in 4th Class was on Galway Bay FM speaking about her fundraising. Realtín donated her hair to the Rapunzel Foundation and she also raised money for the Simon Community. We listened to the interview in class and we were delighted to hear Realtín speak and represent the school so well.
We went on a brilliant walk around our local area. We got to investigate an esker and we visited Templemoyle church and graveyard.
We have been really enjoying Lego SPIKE in 4th Class. Our theme this year is based on travel. We have created ferries and taxis to transport our Lego men and women. It is so much fun using the iPad to create a program to move the Lego pieces we have built.
We created so many beautiful art pieces during the month of December. We have been painting, drawing, colouring, using chalk and pastels and even painting our own Christmas baubles to display on our tree.
As a reward for being an amazing class, 4th class were treated to a hot chocolate and movie party. We had treats and we even got to wear cosy slipper socks.
4th Class had the best day swapping presents during our Secret Santa activity.
He brought some treats for 4th Class. We loved seeing him in Newcastle!
We had an amazing week celebrating Science Week in Fourth Class. We completed some experiments showing how sound is made when objects vibrate and we joined with Third Class to complete a Science Quiz. We also created our own scientists in art class.
After learning all about the inventions of the Ancient Egyptians this month we decided to make our own levers and pulleys. 4th class designed their own pulley to act as a flag mast on a famous building of their choice. The flag could be raised and lowered using their clever pulley designs.
We got to sample some of the amazing sweet treats and cakes from the 6th Class Bake Sale.
We had so much fun this week taking part in Maths Week. We had a class maths challenge and a Guess the Sweets in the jar competition too. 4th Class also took part in a brilliant Zoom maths quiz with 2000 schools from all over Ireland.
We settled into 4th Class with some fun team building exercises. Team work was the aim of the day and we had so much fun catching up after the holidays!
School Tour
3rd and 4th Class went to Bunratty Castle and Folk Park for their tour. A great day was had by all. We were fascinated by the history of the castle and really enjoyed the animal husbandry and the tour of the village street. We even sang along with the resident fiddler!
Sports Day and Active Week
We had a fun-filled week in Newcastle and got to try out lots of sports including rugby, boxing, basketball, athletics and soccer. We also had a brilliant Sports Day led by 6th Class!
Projects on France
4th Class worked hard over the last few weeks researching their project topic. They prepared posters and also made Google Slides to accompany their posters. We really enjoyed presenting them to our peers and learning from each other. Topics included: Sport, Art, Architecture, Agriculture, Cities, School System, French Fashion, French Cuisine and French Revolution.
Gardening
4th Class planted brussel sprouts this year. We prepared our raised bed, planted and watered them. We are looking forward to watching them grow.
Jersey Day
We all wore jerseys on Friday, May 24th for Jersey Day in aid of our playground equipment. It was lovely to see the selection of jerseys on the day!
Gymnastics/Yoga
4th Class have been enjoying some yoga sessions in the sunshine. We have practiced a selection of poses. Have a look at our photos!
Easter Baskets
We made some beautiful clay pots and enjoyed painting and decorating them. Have a look at our creations.
Hurling Training
We have been very fortunate to receive some excellent training sessions from Cian and St. Mary's GAA Club. We really enjoyed the games and drills
Ukulele Performance
We performed 'Like You' by Tatiana Manaois on our ukuleles and sang along too. It was a very enjoyable experience.
Seachtain na Gaeilge
We had a great time celebrating Seachtain na Gaeilge in Newcastle N.S this week. We joined 3rd Class for a Tráth na gCeist which we really enjoyed. We learned some lovely songs and performed 'Pompeii' by Bastille as Gaeilge or Lá Glas. Click on the link below to watch the performance. We had great fun with all the other classes at the Céilí Mór where we danced and sang and enjoyed each other's performances. We learned some new seanfhocail and spoke more Gaeilge each day.

World Book Day
We dressed up as a character from one of our favourite books to celebrate World Book Day. We also enjoyed buddy reading with 2nd Class and loved seeing everyone else's costumes during our Book Character Parade.
Pancake Tuesday/Shrove Tuesday
We enjoyed some delicious pancakes in 4th Class. We also shared stories about where the best places to get pancakes in Athenry, Galway and Ireland are!
Well-Being Week
We enjoyed well-being week in 4th Class and many of us got to try yoga for the first time. We also made some gratitude cards, played games, dressed in bright colours and did some mindful colouring,
St Brigid's Crosses
We had a great day today, learning about St. Brigid, singing songs and organising our rushes to make our own St. Brigid's Cross.
Local History
We were very fortunate to have had Martin Curley visit our school and deliver some excellent local history lessons to our class. We spoke about the castles in the Athenry area and learned about the origins of our townland names. We also enjoyed a wonderful field trip and spoke about castle ruins and eskers that we could see along the way.
Swimming
4th Class are enjoying a 6-week block of swimming lessons in the Raheen Woods Hotel. We are so lucky to have excellent swimming teachers and have improved our stroke techniques and our stamina.
Our Christmas Play- 'A Midwife Crisis'
We thoroughly enjoyed preparing for our Christmas performance in 4th Class. We all helped each other along the way, learning lines, collaborating on costume designs and making changes and suggestions for the script. We gained so much from it and we were so pleased with our performance on December 21st. Thank you to all the parents and grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who came to see us! Happy Christmas Everyone!

Explorer's Project
4th Class has now completed their projects on Sea Turtles with the Marine Institute. We were fortunate to take part in such an exciting project with Sibeal, from the Marine Institute. Over the last few months we learned lots of interesting facts about sea turtles, their characteristics, their habitats, their lifespan, diet and lifecycle. We presented our projects to Sibeal which included posters, clay models and a diorama of the life cycle of the turtle. Sibeal also spoke to us about Dolphins and sharks and we even got to hold a dolphin’s skull and whale's teeth during the session.
Science Week
Science Week was a busy week in 4th Class. We learned lots of interesting facts about famous scientists and enjoyed researching and presenting in groups. We also joined a live Zoom with the Science Foundation of Ireland and were so excited to see some cool experiments. Later in the week we had our own Science Show where groups presented a selection of fun experiments.
Local History Projects
We researched historical places and monuments in our locality and in Athenry town. We worked in groups to present projects and thoroughly enjoyed finding out more about our Medieval town and it's hinterland.
Rugby World Cup
We had great fun in 4th Class over the last two months following the Rugby World Cup. We all had a team and enjoyed discussing the matches and learning about the different participating countries. Our winner who had South Africa was delighted with his prize- a Rugby ball!
Egypt Project
We are doing a project on Egypt with Mr. Cummins. We are having great fun learning about Kings, Pyramids and traditions of the past. We enjoyed designing our own Egyptian jewellery.
Science investigations
We have been learning about levers in science. We worked in groups to investigate how levers work. Have a look at our photos!
Autumn Art
We created some beautiful Autumn artwork using a selection of colours, mostly warm toned colours. We enjoyed blending and making our own shades too.
Bake Sale
We had a lovely time vsiting the Bake Sale in 6th Class. We bought the most delicious treats we had ever tasted. The 6th Class children guided us and advised on on some great bargains. Thank you so much 6th Class! We tried not to eat all our treats and school as we were hoping to share some at home too!
Athletics
We have been enjoying practising our running skills over the last few weeks. We tried some jogging, sprinting and had great fun doing relay races. We worked hard as part of a team and enjoyed challenging ourselves.
