World Book Day
We really enjoyed seeing everyone's costumes and reading extracts from our favourite books for our friends in fourth class as part of our World Book Day celebration.
Pancake Tuesday
Debating
We have been focusing on developing our Persuasive Writing skills this past month. The class was split into groups to prepare for and take part in debates. Children were given the opportunity to express their opinions, practise critical thinking and build confidence in speaking. They learned to listen, respond respectfully and to support their arguments with reasons.
STEM in second class
Here's an example of some of our STEM lessons from last term. We designed, built and tested catapults. We began our Lego Education Spike lessons and we experimented with bubbles.
Halloween
We were busy this week baking chocolate buns, making spooky slime and creating haunted houses. On Friday, we had great fun dressing up and taking part in the Halloween Parade. We ended the day with a class party and disco.
Maths Week in Second Class
As part of Maths Week, the children created their own board games, they played a selection of games on Topmarks, they learnt some card games and they worked together to complete some jigsaw puzzles.
2D Shapes
We were learning about 2D shapes in class last week. In groups, the children were tasked with creating pictures that included a variety of shapes. They really enjoyed this activity and worked well together
We really enjoyed harvesting our runner beans on Friday. We had great fun comparing sizes and measuring them - many of them had grown to over 30cm! The children were delighted to bring them home and were looking forward to eating them.
Friendship Week
We had a very enjoyable week last week celebrating friendship and kindness in our classroom and within the school community. As part of this week, we spent Wednesday afternoon in 4th class making friendship bracelets. A wonderful time was had by all and everyone was delighted with their bracelets.
First Confession
Our First Confession was a very special occasion. Our Mams and Dads were there along with Mrs. O'Connor, Mrs. Keane and Caroline and Triona. Fr Benny and Fr. Charlie made it a very happy and memorable day.
BFGTOEU
This year Second Class took part in the My Big Friendly Guide to the European Union programme where we learned about the EU and how Ireland became a member. For all our hard work we received a special plaque.
Hurling Blitz
The girls from Second Class were excited to travel to Carnmore for their Hurling Blitz. The weather was nice and along with a certificate they got some yummy things to eat and share.
Safer Internet Day
On Safer Internet Day we learned how to stay safe online. We also got some wristbands to help us remember what we had learned during the lesson.
Planting
Everyone worked together to plant potatoes and strawberries.
Lá Glas
At the end of Seachtain na Gaeilge we had our Lá Glas. We had been practising hard so everyone was very excited. We performed our song Báidín Fheilimí for the rest of the school and then we enjoyed all of their songs. At the end we got to do our dance which was the Siege of Ennis. It was very loud and great fun.
Valentine's Art
We did some nice pattern art for St Valentines Day. It was also a great way of using up leftover paint.
Valentine Hearts
We decided that we needed to make something nice for Valentine's Day.
So we made some lovely clay hearts. Then we did some patterns and painted and varnished them. Finally we wrapped them up so that they would be an extra special surprise.
We always enjoy making things out of clay.
Safer Internet Day
This year for Safer Internet Day we did a lesson about being careful with the information that you share online.
Sometimes it's easy to forget that we don't always know who we're talking to when we're online.
Everyone received a certificate and wristband for participating on the day.
Pancake Tuesday
Pancake Tuesday arrived a little earlier than usual this year but everyone in 2nd class was ready for it.
The whole class shared their toppings so that no one was left out.
In no time at all the pancakes were eaten and there were definitely no leftovers.
Healthy Heroes
We were excited to be invited to NUIG by the Paediatric Society for a day of fun and learning.
The day started with a talk about exercise and healthy eating. We played games to get us moving and then enjoyed some healthy food.
Next we had face painting and we all added to the giant colouring page that all the groups shared.
After that we had a talk from Specsavers and we tried on lots of cool glasses. One lucky person won a prize and everyone got a voucher for a free eye test.
Finally we had music games and a disco.
Pizza
In Maths we have been learning about fractions. One of the best ways of helping us to remember our halves and quarters is by cutting and eating pizza!
Our pizzas were cut into halves and then into quarters and finally enjoyed by everyone.
Christmas Art
We did lots of art in the weeks before Christmas.
Everyone chose their favourite one to display.
Some cool Christmas outfits to be seen as well!
Hands
We love creating things from clay. This month we made hands!
First, we rolled out the clay so that it was nice and flat. Next we got our partner to cut around one of our hands with a plastic knife. Then we decorated the hand by drawing patterns on it.
We left the hands to dry and then we painted and varnished them. Finally they were ready.
Dogs Trust
We had a very interesting visit from the Dogs Trust where we learned lots of new facts about having a dog as a pet.
We also learned the correct way to protect ourselves from an angry dog.
At the end of the talk we all got a certificate.
Parachutes
During Science Week we were given the task of making a parachute.
For homework we each got a square of material and some elastic bands.
The next day we tried out our parachutes. There were lots of different designs. Luckily, the weather was dry and breezy. Perfect parachute weather!
Halloween
Halloween has to be one of the most fun times of the whole year.
We get to dress up for school, play games and eat lots of goodies.
Then we get to do it all again for real on Halloween night.
Picker Pals
As part of Science Week we opened our new Picker Pals kit.
Picker Pals helps children to become leaders in looking after their local environments.
We started by tidying around the school. The class was split into three groups and we each took a different part of the yard. In no time at all we had collected lots of rubbish.
Halloween Cupcakes
We made some delicious cupcakes for Halloween. Then we had fun decorating them.
It was even more fun eating and enjoying them!
Friendship Portraits
During Friendship Week we came up with lots of ideas to celebrate all our friends in 2nd Class.
One of our favourite activities during the week was drawing a Friendship Portrait. Everyone drew their partner's portrait and then coloured it in.
To finish we made and decorated a colourful frame.
Friendship Bracelets
During Friendship Week we had fun making friendship bracelets for all of our friends.
Visiting the Garden
On a sunny day in September we decided to visit the garden to see what had grown during the Summer.
We discovered some juicy raspberries and some edible flowers.
We also posed for our first group photo of the year.
2D Shape Pictures
We have been revising our 2D shapes and a fun way to help use remember their names was to use them to make Shape Pictures.
We worked with a partner and we planned our picture together before we started.
They turned out really well and we had lots of fun working together.
Math's Week Scavenger Hunt
During Math's Week we did lots of different activities. One of our favourites was our Math's Scavenger Hunt.
The weather was not very good so we decided to do the Scavenger Hunt indoors.
It was surprising how many interesting things that we discovered in our classroom.
World Book Day
We all enjoyed seeing everyone's costumes at the School Parade in the morning. We were delighted to have a visit from our fourth class friends to partake in some partner reading of our favourite books.
