Sports Day was held on Thursday 5th June. There were numerous stations to go to and activities included Gaelic football, the Water Station, Dodge Ball, Egg and Spoon Race and the Three-Legged Race.
We also did a Noodle game, Limbo and the Sack Race as well as relay races. A big thank you to the 6th Class for helping out on the day at the different stations.
We have been learning all about bees and doing projects on the iPad. We used oil pastel, marker and watercolours to create some beautiful bee artwork.
Following this we used clay to make a beehive and some bees. The technique we used is called coiling. We painted the hives when they were dry and are very proud of our work.
After our tour of Westport House we went into the adventure park where we scaled the Climbing Tower.
Following this we went over to the Giant Net Park where we bounced around on the nets and had tonnes of fun. We had worked up an appetite so went for lunch to Gracy's Pizzeria.
We had a lovely lunch of pizza, goujons, falafel and chips and were even given doughnuts for dessert. Before we went home we spent time in the Interactive Gaming Zone and did some shopping.

On Thursday 29th May we excitedly set off for Westport House. It was a dull and dreary day but we didn't let it dampen our spirits. Upon reaching the Westport Estate we got the train to Westport House.
Our guide showed us around the house and told us the history of the Browne family who used to live there. We looked at old artifacts, statues, libraries and displays. There was even a head of an ancient elk up on the wall.
Part of the house is under reconstruction as the walls have been damaged by sea erosion over the years. We looked down into the man-made garden there.
We visited the servants quarters and cellars and took a tour of the dungeon. We even saw a skeleton hiding in the darkness of the dungeon.
We have been getting crafty in class to create some colouful kites. We used card, skewers, wool and cellophane to make our kites. When we had these constructed we flew them around the school yard.
We have been learning about Procedural Writing so we wrote out the procedure on How to Make a Kite in our copies. We have also been learning about various famous artists recently.
We have been studying and reading about the artwork of Vincent Van Gogh and Andy Warhol to name but a few. We had fun recreating their artwork and even made our own flavour of Campbell's Soup which you can see on our wall displays in the classroom.
We recently had new games lined out on our yard. Here we are testing out those games. We are lucky to have hopscotch, Snakes and Ladders and Target Throw to play now as well as basketball on the basketball court. We enjoy hopping along the lines and footprints and are looking forward to having lots of fun with our friends.
We have been learning all about 3-D shapes and their properties. We worked in groups and used dried pasta and marshmallows to make 3-D shapes.
We made cubes, cuboids, triangular-based pyramids, square-based pyramids and prisms. We focused on edges and vertices and some of us even built towers. We really enjoyed completing this activity.
The Tara Book Fair recently came to school. We enjoyed browsing through the books and made many purchases. Natasha Mac a Bhaird was our visiting author that week.
The Tower Ghost and her books on sports were a very popular choice. She autographed these for us and read us an extract from The Tower Ghost.
Natasha showed us a powerpoint about her ambition to become an author from a young age and even got us to partake in a murder mystery which we thoroughly enjoyed.
For Mother's Day we made butterfly mobiles using tissue paper, lollipop sticks, pipe cleaners and wool. We enjoyed this arts and crafts activity and are sure our mums will be pleased with our hard work in 3rd Class.
We got a huge surprise when Branar visited our classroom recently. It was so unexpected and we were enthralled by the performance. There were lots of laughs and giggles, participation and song. We were amazed with the production of this one man show.
Seachtain na Gaeilge a bhí ann i Mí na Márta agus bhí Tráth na gCeist againn le Rang a Ceathair. Bhí ceathrar nó cúigear i ngach grúpa agus d'oibríomar go mór le chéile. Bhaineamar an sult as an Tráth na gCeist.
For Valentine's Day we printed some heart designs. We scored our designs using A4 polystyrene sheets with our pencils. We used red lino block printing ink and rollers and printed our designs out on to white paper. We were very pleased with how they turned out.
Recently, we went on a Field Trip to the Templemoyle Graveyard. It is enriched in history and culture as well as memories and stories. We walked down to the graveyard, passing streams, fields, flora and fauna.
We learned how the Templemoyle Bell was discovered in a nearby sandpit by a young boy and were surprised to hear the there is a secret tunnel running under the graveyard. It was used as an escape route and to store precious valuables from raiders.
On Lá Glas we enjoyed making some Leprechaun Fridge Magnets. The materials we used were lollipop sticks, card, glue, paint, googly eyes, sharpies and magnetic tape.
We liked how no two leprechauns were exactly the same and how their facial features were all different. We left them out in the sunshine to dry.
On Thursday 6th March we celebrated World Book Day by dressing up as our favourite characters from various books and novels that we like to read. We even got into role!
We worked with a Reading Buddy from 1st Class to do some shared reading together. We thoroughly enjoyed reading to a younger child and for a younger audience.
We had great fun eating pancakes and tasting lots of different toppings on Pancake Tuesday, as you can tell be the grins on our faces!
We used air dry clay to make Christmas gonks/gnomes. We moulded and shaped the clay and added features to individualise our gnomes.
Upon drying we painted them with pretty colours. A lovely Christmas decoration to have as a keepsake.
For Science Week we worked in groups to make lava lamps. The materials we used were plastic bottles, oil, food colouring, effervescent tablets and pipettes. It was fascinating to watch and observe how these materials changed. We really enjoyed doing this activity.
Here we are using the Lego Spike kits to work collaboratively to build various projects. The ones we've done to date are Boat Trip and Arctic Ride.
We followed the building instructions on the iPads and upon completion did some coding to get our constructions to move. We loved adding sound effects to our code! We look forward to building again soon.
3rd Class enjoyed a brilliant trip to Grattan Beach in Salthill as part of the Explorers Programme. The theme of the project this year is Seashore Safari.
We really enjoyed our excursion which involved rock-pooling. We found many crabs, fish, barnacles and many other interesting creatures. We also searched for 'Mermaid's Purses' (Shark and Ray eggs) in the seaweed on the beach. We even found one with a live baby shark inside! It was an incredible experience!
Happy Halloween from 3rd Class!
Here we are trying out some hockey during a hockey taster session. We learned how to hold the stick properly and use the correct posture.
We played bowling, protect the nest and did a penalty shoot out. We thoroughly enjoyed the session. A big thank you to the coach for giving up her time to teach us.
We had a visit from the RSA recently. During the workshop we discussed the importance of hi vis vests, wearing a seat belt, using a car seat and double checking the road when crossing.
We then took turns at role-playing a pedestrian, cyclist and driver, checking carefully when we came to junctions or crossings. If there was an accident we were sent to the hospital.
Lots of changes have been happening over the summer holidays. The garden is bursting with new growth and activity.
The hens have gotten a new 5 Star chicken coop. All of the old fencing has been taken away and the ground leveled. Many thanks to our caretaker who has been working extremely hard. We even got our new classroom freshly painted!
We used all of our senses when exploring the garden and spotted some huge runner beans, onions, raspberries and brussel sprout plants that had grown over the summer. They sure got plenty of watering!
Easter
To celebrate Easter we decorated some Easter Bunny Cupcakes and we even designed some surprise Easter Chick's during art.
Coding
3rd Class loved their first Lego Spike lesson. They designed and created an amusement park ride and fast track lane using lego. They then used the ipads and their coding skills to create a program which allowed the amusement park ride to spin. 3rd Class really enjoyed the challenge. They are looking forward to their next lesson!
